Let’s start with a quick primer to explain what a major scale is:

 

The major scale is a sequence of notes with specific intervals.  An interval is the distance between notes.  An interval of a whole step (W) is a two fret distance on the guitar, and a half step (H) is one fret.  Here is the formula for the major scale:

If we take this formula and use the note C for our root note (the root note is the first note of the scale), we get the C major scale:
